February 21, 2015Carscars, MOT, Used Honda Standard

You’ve decided to buy a used Honda, you have your budget sorted out and you now want to get on and buy your car. Before you do, it is worth picking up a few buying tips to ensure you end up with a great deal. Take a look through these general tips so you’re ready when you arrive on the forecourt. By learning the tips you’ll be able to keep your head on the forecourt and avoid making a decision that you could end up regretting.

Always View the Cars in Good Light

If it’s looking dull and miserable outside, put off shopping for your car until the weather improves. You need to check the condition of the vehicle carefully, and good light is required for this job. If it’s overcast or raining you may miss something that could be an indicator of potential problems. Rain water can hide scratches and even dents so sit and wait out the rain if you can. When you do go and look at the car make sure you check the vehicle from all angles.

Do Your Homework

Check the prices of the cars that are similar to the one you’re interested in. Make sure it’s the same model and the same age and if possible the same condition. Look in papers and on other websites so you’re able to see what most cars are selling for so you can avoid paying more than you need to, the last thing you want is to be overcharged.

While doing your homework on used Honda’s; look for common problems and faults that are associated with certain models too. You can use this information to question the dealer and to help you understand potential problems that could be recorded in the history documents of the vehicle.

MOT Certificates

If you are considering buying a vehicle that is over three years old, you should ask to see the annual MOT certificate. Check the status and the history and the recorded mileage that should be consistent with what’s been recorded on the service record. If you have any doubts always ask for clarification.

Other documents will also need to be checked by you, including the:

  • The V5C document

  • Regular service history

  • Receipts for garage work

The handbook needs to be in the car too as these can cost a lot of money to replace. Additionally, it’s worth asking if the car has a spare key, this isn’t a legal requirement but it’s a good idea to ask where the spare key is if you’re not offered one.

Don’t Rush the Deal

Always take your time to examine any Used Honda, do your research and take the vehicle for a test drive. You shouldn’t feel rushed as you could end up regretting the car you buy if you don’t take the time to check it out properly. Respected car dealerships won’t force you to make a fast decision, they’ll respect that you’re a serious buyer that wants to make the right choice.
